Starting your health journey on the Keto diet isn’t something you want to jump into without being properly informed.
So…What Is the keto diet and how does it work?
The ketogenic way of eating involves consuming high fat and extremely low carb foods. The reason for this is to encourage your body to go into ketosis. Ketosis is the term for what happens when your body starts burning fat as fuel (causing weight loss).
What are the side effects of the ketogenic diet?
- Excessive Thirst
But these are just some short term side effects!
Disclaimer: Everyone’s bodies are completely different, so this is just a general guess at the side effects you could experience but that doesn’t necessarily mean you will.
Who started the Keto diet?
While there’s no official evidence to support who originally started the Keto Diet, doctors back in the 1920’s worked together to use this way of eating in an attempt to treat patients with severe cases of epilepsy.
The reason they did this was because they noticed an odd correlation between patients who appeared to be starving, had less seizures.
Obviously doctors couldn’t encourage their patients to starve themselves, so instead they devised a specific way of eating (the Keto Diet) to confuse the body into thinking it was starving, and thus causing their patients to have less seizures.
What’s the difference between Keto and Paleo?
The main thing that Keto and Paleo have in common, is that they’re both low on carbs. But that’s about where their similarities end.
The Keto dieters believe in eating low carb in order to trigger their bodies into going into ketosis. Ketosis happens when your body starts burning stored fat, thus causing rapid weight loss.
The Paleo dieters believe in eating what humans most likely ate in the “caveman days“. Meaning lots of meats (for protein), eggs, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. They avoid dairy, processed foods, refined sugars, and salt.
